FRIGID FRINGE - BIG BANG
I had been to a comedy club only twice in my life and have a vague memory on the performances I had seen, except for lots of profanities and improvisation, and pints of beer I had that time. I admit that I am pretty ignorant on what comedy is all about.
So, I had no idea what to expect before the show. I was going to enjoy my night out alone and a cocktail or two; but you blew my mind. I instantly knew this was a completely different thing from what I had seen in past.
I was fascinated by continuity throughout the story, perpetually-intriguing mind of yours and tenderness and love toward your family. I also loved “emotionally incontinenceness” and laughed a lot at the potato incident. felt a similar excitement as I felt while reading Junot Diaz, well with much more “appropriate” vocabulary...!!
When I was young, I used to listen to “Rakugo”, the Japanese traditional, comical story-telling, it’s funny and makes you feel full of life because of the mastery - of story-teller. Like Rakugo used to have influence on me, you made me feel wanting to be close to such art! - Izumi

I think you're hilarious and I just bought your book "Pardon My Spanglish" on Amazon and I can't wait to have it on my hands. Jose Luis Melendez Hi Bill! I was scanning channels and passing through Blue Collar Radio on Syrius and you came up. My children were with me in the car so I wasn't going to stay on the station, for my daughter is eight and my son nine and my wife and I avoid profanity in front of the children. But we started listening to you and my children and I couldn't stop laughing. They laughed so hard, specially when you got the people to do the coquí sound. You are a hell of wonderful artist. Bill,
As usual, we enjoyed your show last night. You had quite an interesting
crowd, including the legendary Bobby Sanabria. A great bunch of Nuyoricans
with a few token Dominicanos, including my husband. We have enjoyed your
work for many years and so have my students at Brooklyn College after you
graciously sent me a DVD of your Comedy Central Show on TV. It is the last
class of my Hispanic Linguistics class and they love it.
My suggestion to publish more books on Spanglish from a comedy/language
perspective also comes with an offer of help. Maybe even a play, like
Dolores Prida in Botanica. I have published many books on several topics
including US Latino writing ( one was on the shelves at the bookstore
yesterday, The Latino Reader), and would be happy to help you with editing
or any other writing questions. At the end of this year I'll be retiring
from teaching after 37 years at Brooklyn College and we're moving to
northern California. Our only child, a daughter, moved to LA in January and
so the idea is "what the hell are we doing in NYC"? It's time to go. Of
course, we could also relate to your comments about having a daughter. We
waited 9 years after we got married to finally decide to have a child and
I'm glad we did. Parenthood is great but the fun is definitely over once
they arrive.
We wish you much continued success and you might consider a new agent who
can get you the kind of paid exposure you need. For me, you're a Puerto
Rican combination of Lenny Bruce and Dick Van Dyke with salsa. Suerte con
todo.

Hi Bill,
We haven't seen you since you appeared at the Puerto Rican Poet's Cafe a few summers ago. Hope to catch you at the Casa Azul in July. Any chance you will be performing in northern NJ soon?
My son was reviewing how to say certain food words in Spanish - bread, pies, pastries, etc. I told him that in Puerto Rico donuts are "donas". He replied instantly that if he owned a donut shop in PR, he would call it "Do nas, don't tell." Pretty cute, I thought.

Hi!
One of my college professors showed a clip from one of Bill Santiago's stand-up shows last year and my classmates and I have been waiting to see him live ever since, but he hasn't come to Chicago--what do we have to do to see Santiago live in Chicago? I will petition local comedy clubs if necessary. We hard-working Spanish majors need a field trip (and a few margaritas wouldn't hurt).
Thanks,

Hola Mr. Santiago,
I heard your act for the first time on Sirius Radio this past September (2012). I have enjoyed every video clip of you I can find on the Web. Pleeeeeeaaaassssseeeee come to Denver, Colorado. I know for a fact that my sister, mother, husband and myself will see you, maybe even some of the Mexican-Americans, Mexicans, South Americans, Central Americans, Puerto Rican, Nuyoricans, Cubans, Dominicans and Military that live here between Wyoming and New Mexico. I hear that there are a few of us living in New Mexico, but, it may be just a rumor. I can’t tell you how many Blanquitos (those which are Latino by insertion, i.e. my husband) would have to attend your show or else they have to sleep with the dog, husband; or cat, wife or horses if they own a ranch.
Mira, I would even drive to see your show in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If you do Vail, Aspen or Breckenridge, then many Latinos may not be able to make it. The mountain passes and their altitudes are hard on “hoop-dees”! I believe esta parte del pais is ready and waiting for your brand of humor. You are very funny, thought provoking and personable in other words a Puerto Rican. Baya!
Seriously, please consider Denver or Colorado Springs (or both) for 2013. You will have a great time. I wish you much success and happiness in your career, even if you only make it as far as Nebraska.
Sincerely,
Your fan from Colorado

I've read so much commentary on this iconic moment in political/cultural history, but yours tops them all. And thanks for the reference to THE INVISIBLE MAN, I think there's real relevance there. Eastwood was the RNC's id. In that sense, his method acting was brilliant. I hope the Dems don't miss their chance at counter humor. Say Chris Rock talking to a ten thousand dollar bill that represents Mitt, or an empty yacht. Humor should never be absent from a political convention, because the scripted blah blah blah, starts to cause brain atrophy.

Great job! You really touched on so many facets of the Latino experience in this country. I also appreciated watching the Olympics on Telemundo. It made me proud of our people. As a Puerto Rican-Mexican family, it would be nice to see networks represent the rainbow of colors our folks come from. We are not just on nation, we come from many rich cultures, each with its unique history and customs. I hope they would hire you on one of the networks and allow you and other brilliant Latinos to explore a show that would invite, celebrate, humor and teach us a thing or two. The US is so fortunate to have such a large community of people and it has to learn to appreciate all that we offer and that we are. We are not just one thing, but many and all.

I loved your post and agree with all of the points that you made. I wrote a similar piece on the same NYT article for my blog, http://chicaandthecity.com/?p=621 , in which I went even further to suggest that often times American media outlets do very little to acknowledge the different ethnicities present in the Latino community. This, I feel, is important, because I've heard a few Latinos explicitly say that the wouldn't necessarily be moved to watch a certain movie or play because it's about another Latino ethnicity, and they just don't relate. I think that, yes, we have a lot of similarities, and often times it is enough to bring us together, but networks have to tread carefully and ensure that they produce something that is appealing to all ethnicities within the Latino community, and not make it too ethni-centric. Doing so will lead to attracting only a small community from the large one targeted. Univision and Telemundo have the formula down, creating characters who are just people with a story, who happen to be Hispanic. I hope that English-language networks can do the same. I'm excited to see what new talent and stories we'll be privy to as a result.
- Tanisha Love
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You covered a lot of ground here, and for once I like and agree with the comments section - all relevant. The paragraph on your father grabbed my attention: that would make a fun family tv show. Have you heard any good lawyer jokes? They usually have a mean center, but what you've put down has heart.

Brilliant article and so accurate and hopefully enlightening to the powers that be. But, oh my Latino brethren, as we wish for a Latino series that depicts us as the multi-layered Americanos we are, whether we were born here or abroad, there is such a series that for what its worth may never see the light of a network stage because not even Latinos support "Latino" programs. If we are to salir adelante and chant si se puede then for the love of god, tune into what Latino artists are doing. You want Latino writers who do not write cliches and have created a series with characters who are professionals, well you got it: Dennis Leoni (Resurrection Blvd), you want intelligent Latino stars who have an American and Latino appeal, ( that don't speak with an affected fake accent because it's not called for because they were born in the U.S).- well you got it- Esai Morales (Caprica), Raymond Cruz (The Closer), Yvonne Delarosa (Weeds, Longmire), Tony Plana (Ugly Betty) and (RIP) Lupe Ontiveros (Selena). They are all part of a series that is exactly the breakout "Cosby Show" model but with a Latino-American family. Its called "LOS AMERICANS" and it just won the Imagen Award for best web series. It's even playing teasers on all the metro buses in LA to an audience of mostly Latino patrons to the tune of over 25 million viewers a week. Support your gente, people! www.losamericans.c

Tanya De Leon With so much info on the internet, and so many distractions, sometimes our attention spans don't last long enough to read more than a simple status post on FB, lol, BUT I truly enjoyed your WHOLE article, and couldn't agree more. I would like to mention that I love to watch "switched at birth" on abc family (new season this fall), I think that the characters played by Constance Marie and Ivonne Coll (daughter and mother respectively) are tasteful. Yes there are stereotypes (we do need stereotypes to an extent in order to understand how to relate to people) but they aren't done in a mocking condescending way. As always, thanks for sharing, will def be passing it along.
Susan Coss seriously heart this piece.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kalin Kai Chow Great article!!! I don't know if I told you in the past. My mom is Puerto Rican & my dad is Chinese. I was born & raised in East Harlem. I am a TV baby. The only positive role models of color I had was Maria/Luis from "Sesame Street" & Sulu/Spock from "Star Trek"!(Yes, I thought the Vulcan was a Chino with messed up ears!) My point is; for decades I have cringed, I have shook my head in disbelief and have sat there with my mouth wide open as "Hispanic/Latino" characters have been part of the buffoonery depicted on TV & film. Will there ever be a "Cosby" for the Hispanics? Who knows? There has to be a truthfulness in which laughs are derived from "universal" themes and laughs from our "uniqueness" without pandering or putting ourselves down. It is a fine balance. Remember, there are people in the African American community who just could not relate to "The Cosbys". If you took a typical Cosby show script, it could be performed as written by an all white cast. Is that the key? Take a good generic premise & just hire a Hispanic/Latino cast? No se! Keep up the great work, Bill!

Oh, my God. You actually replied to the email yourself! I thought i would get a standard reply from an assistant of yours. If not, I would have written a longer email. I just want to add that you make us "latinos" proud. Everything you said about latino culture is soooo true. And its nice to see a comedian that can be funny without being vulgar. That's a true comedian. You really put a smile on my face.
Oh and i stumbled across your video because I once saw your comedy show years ago on tv and I was feeling sad the other day and I asked myself, "what could make me feel better and make me laugh?". Then I thought, "Bill Santiago!". So I went online and tried to figure out what your name was because at the time I didn't know.

Hi, Bill! A Boricua from New York, huh? Sounds familiar. I was born and raised in el Barrio (175 E. 101 St., Apt. 5) until about age 10 when my parents felt it was time to go back home. My mother was from Mayaguez and my father from Guayama. We ended up in Guayama until I graduated from college in Ponce. Then I moved alone to Philadelphia and lived/worked there until 2002 when the bug to leave cold winters forced me to move to Los Angeles. How did I hear about you? Best friend Lucía Maldonado Medina (who is on your friends list) started posting videos of you and got me hooked on your comedy. Man, you’re like the Puerto Rican Jerry Seinfeld! I love those observations and funny comments about our culture clashing with the mainstream here in the states.
Anyway, thanks for the information and will follow up. I wish you all the best on your flourishing career and keep us laughing! ¡Dios te bendiga y saludos!
I saw him last year on Comedy Central and I've been dying to find out his name ever since! Finally. I can't believe he's not big time yet. He should've been crowned long ago! Love him! One of the best, I dare say.

Bill's performance was a riot! Everyone was in tears laughing and enjoyed the energy he brought to the stage. Mizzou's Hispanic American Leadership Organization saw clips of his stand up on Youtube and knew we had to book him for HALO week in April. His humor isn't crude or offensive--just honest and hilarious! Many of our members miss the traditions and heritage of their home countries, and Bill's interactive dance bit had everyone feeling back at home, despite being in the middle of Missouri! We would definitely book him again!

Dear, Señor Bill! I would first like to apologize for any silly grammar mistakes I might make! My family and I are one of the many families that moved from Puerto Rico to the United States for a better life. We moved to Pennsylvania in 1999 and at the time I was four. I've been told that my brother and I learned English very quickly. That's a just a little about myself.
Anyway, I heard about you one night when I was watching tv with my family and we saw your name under comedy central. We all thought ,"Man, this must be good." And we were right! You ARE hilarious! You talk about our culture in a way that people who do not necessarily know much about can laugh to! But any whom, I was talking to Mami the other day about your book," Pardon my Spanglish" and she said,"Whoa! Gotta get me that book!" So I'm pretty sure that your book under the family household really soon!
Well I gotta go to school so I'll talk to you later!

Hey Bill,
Netflix online has all the Comedy Central Presents performances. It is listed alphabetically, which means your special plays towards the top of the list :)
You are a really unique performer! Stand-up comedy is my favorite thing to watch online and you are one of the only comics I found on Facebook after watching them on Netflix.
I look forward to seeing more of your shows in the future!
Thanks for writing and for the information.

Your show on Febuary 17 at Rooster T Feathers in Sunnyvale was recommended to me by my friend whom used to work there.
I had a great time and wish I could tell a joke well. I keep trying to repeat yours in my head, but don't dare butcher it with my mouth.
I'll just have to refer friends to your shows instead.
Are you coming to Portland Oregon anytime for a show?

Bill,
I just watched your Showtime special (I DVR'd it). You are absolutely wonderful. I love your demeanor, the lack of profanity, and everything about your act. I'm proud that we had you on my show in Harlem.
Some of the comics with whom I work have 10 years of experience (I have 1 year) and are eager to get on TV. If you have any suggestions on how such comics can work thru the Showtime system.
Best wishes. Keep winning.

Loved your act last night at the Throck. As a writer/editor, I can really appreciate anyone who can make people laugh about words like "awesome," "iota," and "per se." Brilliant, as was the bit about eggs. Thanks for a ton of laughs!

Bill,
I wanted to send a follow-up note to express my gratitude for entertaining and
sharing your comedic talent and intellectual prowess with us. Okay this sounds
more like a business memo so let me stop now and say instead that.... you were effin hilarious last night (as we've probably told you over and over)! We
couldn't stop raving about you (or more appropriately....we COULD have stopped, but chose not to). I continue to support live shows and performances because of truly gifted people such as yourself.
Take care and good luck tonight!
Your newest admirer,

P.S. I've attached a photo from last night. That's me in the black... still enjoying myself even waaayy past your set.

I saw your special on Showtime and it was hilarious. I loved it! I had gone to see your show at the Museo del Barrio, “The Funny of Latin Dance” so I knew I would not be disappointed. I was watching the Showtime special and felt like I knew you! Keep up the great work and I wish you all the best. God bless!
This guy is one of the funniest I've seen. Keep an eye on bill. He is going to be a big star one day.

Hi Bill - just got your book, PMSPB, in the mail today. I was in line at the bank drive-thru, reading the inside flap, and nearly DIED laughing - HAAAAAA! The woman in the SUV in front of me kept looking in her rear view mirror, giving me the evil eye, lol. I think it's already the funniest book I've read. You've dethroned Carl Hiaasen!

Thank you for an amazing show. You were BRILLAINT!!! You walked that line of sensitivity, and humor. You made people laugh about what makes them cry. This is why we are alive. To be touched and to laugh. You have a gift -- probably inherited from a previous lifetime but I'm glad to know you in this one.
Larry

Bill,
I can't tell you how absolutely brilliant your show was last night!!!!!!! Of all the shows I have seen that one was the best!. I like. We all liked. My friends kept saying how you were like the next Seinfeld or how much reminded them of Michael Richards. You were better. Your stage presence has a more commanding, smoother quality than ever before.
The venue was also so intimate and perfect. You were so witty and natural and warm. What I loved most was how sincere it was and all the personal stories you shared touched me and made me laugh at the same time. I think you have touched on the whole point of life -- to enjoy the craziness -- not take it to seriously and to evoke our hearts.
On another note, Fairuz is Muslim, but not a fundamentalist type, as she is married to a Hindu (we have to make the distinction these days). She's always getting supersensitive and angry about how Muslims are portrayed and I was afraid she would get sensitive about the Muslim part, but you brilliantly walked that line of what we are all thinking (including the muslims) about the crazy bullshit in the religion, while being careful not to offend. She thought you were amazing and I wanted you to know. That is a very fine line to walk and you did with your expert sensitivity and humor. You made something very heavy very light, without painting broad brush stokes about all Muslims being terrorists -- you still touched on the obvious, without being offensive. That is what makes you brilliant. I don't really know how you did that.
Thank you so much for making me laugh until I hurt. You are so amazingly smart and talented and I am so proud of you! Looking forward to bringing a bigger crowd out to Yoshi's! Everyone needs to be touched by your talent.
With love,
Lata
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank YOU Bill, not only did I laugh during your entire show, but my Catholic Mom and Muslim Dad (non-practicing), one on either side of me did too... they loved it, and I was so happy to feel them laughing like that... it's been awhile and it felt awesome! Thank you, thank you, un abrazo!

Hi Bill,
I just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed your show at La Pena last Friday, and how much it has stayed with me. I especially liked that it was a really thoughtful as well as funny show (so don’t be too critical of those zen-like moments of silence on the tapes—that was the audience digesting). Gabriella and I both agreed it was extremely moving, especially the stories about your dad. And I loved the way you interwove those stories with your hilarious takes on death and the various religions, starting with the oldest (I especially liked the way you talked about the “Holy Ghost” –-that concept now makes me think about Caspar with a halo), moving through the newer ones, and finally to the technology cathedral, looking for answers. And the lovely irony that all the while, by telling stories about your father and bringing him to life (in front of a live audience no less), you were answering your own question—it is not science or religion that brings our loved ones back from the dead, but memory and the art of story-telling (which also favors the turtle theory of world creation). What a wonderful, poignant message!
Remember way back in SF when you went to see Spaulding Gray and wanted your work to approach what he was doing? You’ve done it! Fabulous job!!!!
Love,
Cathryn
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I owe you such an apology!!!!! What a dope I am! Your work, your humor, your innerstanding is AWESOME, clear and quite provocative! I was feeling tired and I despise the words ascribed to women who choose, even if unwittingly or due to a gun to their head or feelings of abject despair, to sell their bodies. However, I digress. I read your entire piece and only missed your performance due. to another engagement! I will gladly see you another time, if you care to invite me after my senseless letter to you. I hope you'll forgive me jumping the gun as I so shamefully did! Thank you!
Peaceful awakenings, (though for me it was't! lol)

Hi Mr. Santiago!
I just got back from your show! It was awesome! My friends all loved it. Thank you for all your trouble with putting all those people on the list! We got the front row =)
I did stop by afterwords to say hi, and while we did talk a little bit about the show airing in may, i should have properly reintroduced myself, since i realized I had assumed that you would recognize me right off the bat! Whether or not you did, doesn't matter, thank you again. I hope to continue seeing your growing success.
Keep me posted!

Tonight, when Dad discovered that I have a DVD player on my computer, he wanted to watch a DVD that his brother had sent him, of an anniversary gospel concert he'd played in. After that was done, since Mom and Dad were sitting at my computer, I grabbed the opportunity to finally have them see the DVD you sent me of your Comedy Central Show.
Not surprisingly, they loved it. One favorite part (of many) was about getting beat up by Jesus. They also enjoyed noting how many of the top ten best things about being Latino also applied to black folks. (One of my all-time favorite Bill jokes: Never having to say, "Am I early?") They loved the caricatures (if you ever get those on a shirt, I'm buying one at any price). And Mom gloated about how great a venue it was in and what a good-sized crowd was there.
Just letting you know you're a bigger hit than ever on Emerson Street--
Un abrazo,
Leah

As the token latina therapist at a non-profit, I was asked to give a workshop on cultural sensitivity. I was researching Latino stand-up because you guys make it seem easy and came across a video of you on you-tube I think. I heard about your book while chatting with a comadre who had seen it on the news, but have not had a chance to read it, might put it on the reading list for the workshop though! Saw your routine in shit hole sunnyvale and loved it. It's official, soy un fan.

Hey Bill, I saw you a long time ago at the Victoria Theatre in San Fran when you did the opening act for the film Latin Kings of Comedy. Loved your material! I missed your last show here at the Brava, I think. My friend Tony Ramirez was working on a salsa dance thing with you.
Happy Thanksgiving! Will catch your next show in the city!

I know, ya los vi todos!!
Me encantaron los videos. Have you been in CT? There is a nice place here, a comedy theater in the Manchester CT area.
Good comedians come here. You should be in their list, let me know if you been here, or I will request you.
CT have lots of latinos, in the Hartford area.
I found you yesterday on you tube and showed you to my husband, he was having a ball. UNA BOLA!!! jajajaja. Mi esposo es un payaso, with the hope to one day have the opportunity to be in comedy amateurs night. Yo no quiero estar there!!! LOL
I like your estilo. Maybe because you write, you have some much vocabulary en ingles and still use the big words to joke with: I like that. No se si me entiendes?
(Is funny to be me to sarcastic with big intelectual words.) Ay Dios mio! no se si me entenderas, pero el punto es que me mori de la risa.
Anyway, I order your book, my aunt and I love to share chistes so, will use some of your Spanglish notes to share if is ok with you.
Un orgullo to know about you, y tu exito, te deseo mas y mas.
Una nueva fan en CT.

Hola Bill,
Que alegria recibir tu mensaje!!
I'm planning on catching your show in NYC on Nov 28th.
I'm a Spanish teacher in northern NJ who loves your comedy. Found out about you quite by accident when I received an Isla catalog (from PR) & inside was a glowing description of you, your comedy. & your book. So I checked you out on CC. In fact, I even showed a 3 minute segment of "Spanglish" to my Spanish classes. (I explained some vocab first and they roared at the "el choo choo" segment). I still need to buy your book solo si prometes firmarmelo (ja-ja)
Did you know the linguistic term for Spanglish is "code-switching"? I learned in my linguistic classes that it occurs worldwide in every language community where two or more languages are spoken concurrently by native speakers. Wikipedia has a great definition and even better examples.
Hasta muy pronto,
MaryBeth Raymar

Dear Bill:
I hope you are well. The last time you were in town I was out of the country. As always, I continue to consider you among our most talented comedian. Currently I am co-Chairing the Hispanic National Bar Association's Legislative Day. We are hosting a Dinner on Capitol Hill where we will honor Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez and Linda Sanchez for their excellence in leadership. We are expecting 150-160 guests, representing lawyers, judges, members of congress and national leaders of top latino organizations.
As a special treat and considering these challenging times, our planning committee wanted something entertaining and fresh. Your name came up by both Lucero Ortiz and myself. Lucero has already reached out to Aurora (please see email below). I am reaching out to you to explore the possibility of having you deliver your wonderful performance. This event is scheduled for May 6, 2009 reception begins at 5:30 and the dinner is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. We would love for you to perform during our dinner.
Could you please tell me what are your fees and costs associated with an engagement like this. We are committed and could give you a quick response rather quickly. HNBA is the nations premier Hispanic Bar representing over 10,000 Latino lawyers from around the country.
Sincerely,
Alejandra Y. Castillo, Esq.

Hola Bill!
I actually enjoy this spanglish talk! Pues, gracias por tu visita a CMU. Gracias por tu book! It made my noche!
Me encantaba your performance! I've attached the foto we took juntos.
También, I would like to ask you, if you would like to contribuir to my senior proyecto sobre la comunidad latina en Pittsburgh. Es una colección de extractos de varios interviews que tengo con diferentes latinos en Pittsburgh. Y todos los extractos will be put on a website.
I know you were only in town for...probably el fin de semana peroooo! you did get to experience the CMU audience and you did get to baila con algunos estudiantes! Pues, uno de los temas de mi proyecto es el tema de la lengua. It would be an honor if you could also contribuir tu opinión sobre spanglish...como 5 to 10 sentences...de cualquier opinión que tiene. If you´re too ocupado, I completely understand! Muchismias thanks!

Bill's performance was incredible. It was a riot, in my humble opinion. Overall, I think the event was a smashing success and we would love to have Mr. Santiago back in the future.
On a side note, Bill was a very gracious and considerate guest, and it was incredibly easy to work with him. Very professional as well. You have definitely got a world-class performer on your you hands with Bill Santiago. We would recommend him to other colleges and universities in a heartbeat, no doubt.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for adding me and responding to my note. I can't wait to read your book! I used to see a comedian named Reuben when he opened up for Marc Anthony concerts years ago. I can't remember his last name. You are funnier though. Take care,

I caught your show on Comedy Central.
I sent a clip of your show to my family, they all think I am a genius, so Gracias, for that one. Personally, the genious is you. You figured out how to make our mundane lives, that seem strange to many people, funny! I always thought my family was dysfunctional as well. But I liked being in denial so I just told myself, "we're just happy people that talk loud, and dance anytime we hear a good salsa or merengue sound." Now, you have taught me that we are not dysfunctional....we are "tropical" heheheheh God bless you for that one, Popi! HAHAHAHAHAHA
Much love,

February 27th
Bill Santiago is one of the most gifted comedians out there today. He is provocative, hilarious, smart and utterly entertaining. He’ll be at the Barnes & Noble in Torrance, California at 2PM on Saturday, February 28th talking about his book Pardon My Spanglish, Porque? Because. He’ll also be doing a short performance piece right there in the store.
I met Bill two years ago when SnapDragon was vetting/auditioning comics for a live event for Univision. We looked at more than 75 Hispanic comedians for this show and ended up selecting Bill to headline the event.
Bill is well-established in the comedy community. His TV credits are extensive including a Comedy Central hour special and all the late night talk shows. But after looking at so many comics, it’s clear to us that Bill is in a league all his own and in many ways represents the next wave of Hispanic comedy—both for what he is and what he is not. Bill does not rely on negative and nasty stereotypes to get laughs. This kind of old school comedy and cultural myopia is not relevant to him. So there’s nothing hackneyed in his act. His material is often brilliant and beautifully crafted. And he brings a ton of energy and beautiful vulnerability to his performance.
Bill speaks to issues, experiences and emotions in a way that will deeply resonate not just with Hispanic Americans, but all Americans. Bill is more than supremely funny. He has something important to say, something important to share, and this is the mark of comedian who matters.
Stay tuned for Bill Santiago. We will be hearing more about him about in the future.

Bill,
Great seeing you perform last night! Thanks for talking with me after the show. You are so much funnier than Jerry Seinfeld, and you deserve the success he's had! Not to mention, his private plane!
Love your timing, wit, facial expressions--you've got a fantastic comedy package! And I think you'd be a great comedic actor as well...
As Rivercenter's PR person for the past 15 years, I've worked with Carlos Mencia, George Lopez ( I was the PR person for the Latino Laugh Festival for several years) and Larry the Cable Guy, to name a few. I told George that he was first class in every aspect and I knew he was headed for major success. I think you are too.
Best, Michele

Bill,
I sat here and watched the show again... Love the top ten. Heading out to Barnes and Noble today to get your book. Then I will be bothering for an autograph in my libro.
In the meantime, I have to ask you? Did your mom find 101 uses for Vicks vapor rub? (True Story) I had trouble sleeping as a child, and my mom couldn't get me to drink those nasty "teas" she made that looked like shrubs from outside...So she said to me one day, "Nena, ponte un poco de vicks en de tus parpados" ... I know this may sound strange, but in my house, vicks cured everything, and believe or not, the vapor rub on my eyelids made my eyes cry, so I couldn't open my eyes. I WAS ALSEEP WITHIN 10 MINUTES! True story. To this day, my mother says, well, it got you to sleep, didn't it? Mami is always right.

I don't know Bill Personally but obtained his info after one of the BROADS of BROADWAY, Linda Belt, told me about him. She worked with him and told me he's great, I checked it out and she was right. Google him and watch the clips, In my opinion, this is the Heir to the Freddie Prinze throne.
This guy is absolutely brilliant and coming up quickly and currently on his Comedy Central tour "Pardon My Spanglish"

Dear Mr. Santiago,
You were very good tonight on Craig Ferguson's show. Smart, funny, and
no need for swearing. After moving furniture and vacuuming much of
today it was a welcome relief to laugh during an otherwise sleepy night.

Bill,
I caught your act tonight at La Pena--had just seen you last month at Universal City (KP National Diversity Conference).
I was concerned that I might not find you as funny the 2nd time around. Guess what? I laughed even harder this time!
Right on. Great show. Thanks for the laughs.
Lisa
PS- I wanted to pick up your book tonight, but only had a credit card and was worried it might not go through.
Yes, I pray everytime I hand mine over to a cashier!

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the e-mail, and thanks for the great show.
You're so good at connecting with your audience; they seemed to experience your comedy rather than just watch it, and your show had such a feeling of warmth to it.
I love sarcastic, cynical comics as much as the next guy (I'm asking Lewis Black to sit in for me at my son's career day), but you don't leave a Denis Leary show feeling like mankind is all one big happy family. In contrast; not only did I laugh my ass off at your set, but afterwards I wanted to rush home, give my whole family a hug, then sign up for a few volunteer programs. Good stuff.
Thanks again,
Vernon

Hi Bill!
I'm a big fan of yours, I saw ur special on comedy central one night a couple of yrs ago, con mis primas, and we pissed our pants laughing so hard. I just had to see you live, so we all got lucky enough to go to one of ur gigs at a comedy club in NYC shortly after. It was a great intimate experience, I had messaged you before going and you told me to come see you after the show. I did that and you went backstage and gave me a copy of your special on DVD, I'll never forget it. I make all my friends and family members to sit down and watch that dvd anytime they want to see a good stand up show. They're never disappointed...it's one of those things where we can incorporate so many of your quotes into our everyday lives (bring nuyorican myself) and still crack up.
But enough of the mushy stuff! Take care, I'm going to be ordering a copy of your book and I'll let you know when I finish it =)
hugs & besos - Cyn

PERO OMG when were you at Wellesley?!!
I am so upset I missed you.
I was on youtube randomly surfing and being the huge nuyorican I am, I typed in "puerto rican comedy".
I stumbled upon your spanglish and I absolutely loved it. I then emailed it to my only other Puerto Rican here at Babson College, then made him watch it with me.
I was home in NYC for the weekend and I showed my parents, my mom was laughing hysterically. My father is a serious white castle man, when my older siblings were young he tells me stories of the 10 cent burgers LOL

Hi Bill,
I caught you on NPR. Since I’m a Nuyorican by birth and I’ve been living in New Hampshire for 21 years, your Spanglish was music to my ears. I remember speaking it as a very young child “Mámi– I’m cold! Dame la frisa!” and I definitely saw a few chancletas being directed at my brother. My parents, who are gone now, didn’t want us being confused by both languages, so we pretty much stuck to English once my brother and I were in school. It was all around us, though, since we grew up in the Bronx.
My all-time favorite example of Spanglish was on I Love Lucy, when Ricky told a bedtime story to Little Ricky in Spanglish. I
I like your comedy – you don’t put us down by playing up the stereotypes of poverty, crime, etc. It’s all good fun, and thank you for a good laugh.

Hey que paso Bill,
It was awesome running into you on 24th today. I would have stayed and talked a bit longer but I was in a hurry. What I didn't get to say that I wanted to was that I was at your show in Hermosa Beach when that lady made the comment about why there haven't been any black presidents. ¡Que racista! I couldn't believe she said that, my friend and I were both shocked. The ignorance of some people still amaze me!
Keep up the great work Bill, I love your comedy and your use of Spanglish. You bring a great perspective to the Latino experience in the U.S. and I look forward to seeing you perform in SF on your next visit.
-René

Hey Bill,
Guess what?? I was able to still catch your show with all the workshops I was taking, I was so excited I could make it. I came by to your Saturday show and had a blast. You are out of this world amazing.. sorry I didn't say hi, I had to rush out to catch a performance at Cafe Cocomo by Eddie Torres from NYC.
You are also an amazing Tangero, wow!!! You are a big hit with dancers, and this show will be a huge success, NO DOUBT!!
I hope that you have recorded one of the 'The funny of (Latin) Dance shows & will sell it, cause I'll be the first to buy it..
Wish you all the best, you are amazing, I can't say it enough!!!

Oye, I bought your libro the other day and was thumbing through it, and was laughing my head off.
As Ricky Ricardo use to say..."I think you might got something there!"
LOL...
Don't dismay I plan to read the book in it's entirely but while thumbing...it reminded me of this TV show that would come on PBS channel 13, when I still lived in New York.
IT was called 'QUE PASA USA", about a cuban family trying to in get along en los estados unidos. YOu might have heard of it. Although I've never met anyone who has...no se porque???
I loved it, never missed a show.
In fact, my mother came to visit me for a few months and I was desperate to find things to entertain her with, spanish channels, scouting out spanish radio stations for her to listen to while I was at work, anyway...one day while online I decided to do what I thought was the impossible..I looked for the DVD's for the show and found them.
As soon as they arrived I play them for her, and she just became hysterical with the families antics and situations. Especially the grandparents and all those latin 'sayings'..I watched them as if for the first time again with her. It was a wonderful feeling to watch a latin family on TV that one could relate to and remember one's own family.
This is what your book will bring to many of us latins out here. The familiarity of phrases, habits, sayings, food, dance..
Thanks again for writing it...
Good luck with this and all that it will bring you!
Liz

Comedy Central Presents: Bill Santiago
This guy is hilarious. One of his jokes goes like this:
Mexicans get shot trying to get into this country (US)
Cubans get shot trying to leave their country
And Puerto Ricans get shot trying to HAVE their OWN country.
Politically incorrect for some but if you can't laugh at life's inconsitencies then la vida se te amarga...Oops Spanglish. Bill Santiago also reflects on our use of Spanglish. Click on the link below.

Just wanted to tell you that I think you a stunning man and a brilliant comic. ( don't calculate order) can't always relate when you go towards the Latin end ( I fear it keeps you marginalized, but HELL! ...you may have found your niche and are riding the big wave) but I alway thought you'd at the very least have your own thing on Comedy Central ... yes I know ...but I mean all the time..you're damn funnier than Louis Black for Gawd's sake!!
I feel privileged to have seen you one night when you were pure genius. It was the night you forgot your lines somewhere in the MIssion.... a friend of yours told me at the end of the set...I never even sensed it. I think it gave a fresh, off the hip quality to the act and your improvisations were sharp and cunning .
I fell in love with you then.
Keep up the good work .
A groupie

Mija Magazine - From Queen Roberta’s Blog - Sept 2008
I met one of the hottest Latino comediennes out there right now and his name is Bill Santiago. Yeah I know, there are no Mijas named “Bill Santiago.” Let’s just say he is one of the few Mijos in the Mija Magazine family.
It was one cold, snow flakey day in downtown Cleveland, Ohio at a comedy club called Hilarities. I got there 10 minutes before show time and sat waaaay in the back – not by choice. I purchased a top of the line chocolate martini as the lights dimmed.
I looked at my ticket and it had the names of Bill Santiago and a guy by the name of Craig Ferguson. “Who the heck is Craig Ferguson?” I said to myself. I soon found out later, but I wasn’t there to see him, I was there to see the Boricua from Manhattan.
Bill Santiago was called to command the stage and command the stage he did. While performing stand up, Bill tackles issues such as growing up Latino, Spanglish speakers, entertainment, politics, day-to-day life, religion and chanclas. His delivery is in Spanglish. (English & Spanish) It is not the type of Spanglish to discourage ones in the audience that may not have experienced Spanglish speakers. Ones in his audience that are not Latino will learn to embrace the Latino culture through laugh. You may even add a few new words to your vocabulary by the end of the show! It’s a PG 13 show as well, which is good. The only “F word” I heard in his show was “Feng-Shui.”
Bill Santiago is intellectually giving all that appreciate and love comedy, a breath of fresh air. Who else can talk in two languages to an evenly mixed crowd without having one lose interest? You be the judge.
I highly recommend Bill Santiago as a must see. He was a huge hit on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. He pimped a raft on Conan O’ Brian and has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

hahaaaaa. I found him to be very refreshing, there were truths behind what he said, only magnified, and he does it with a style all his own, "Puerto Ricans get shot at trying to have their own nation," that was priceless when he said that. The whole thing was awesome.

Me gusta Bill Santiago!!
That is the extent of my Spanish skills BUT I have to say- I love you Bill Santiago because you were the one to put a label on the affliction I couldn't explain!! Thanks to you I now understand that I am "Latino curious" and proud!! Before I saw you on comedy central-- every time I spoke to a Latino, as a white girl from the suburbs, there was a spark of interest and excitement when I heard Spanish I could not understand... until you so eloquently explained it as being "Latino curious".
As aspiring cruise ship comics ourselves-- My perita & I really enjoyed your show & wish you much success and joy!! (are U impressed I know a small female dog is a peritA not a perro or perito??:)
!!Viva Bill Santiago!! (I may be white but I do know I just wished you long life... right?? ('Cause some very nice Puerto Ricans from my neighborhood said that's what 'Viva' means while I was walking by a sign that said 'Viva Jesus!' & asked them for an explanation- they didn't lie to me did they?)
Wishing you all the best-:)

I saw your comedy special for the first time last Sunday. My son is a Comedy Central fanatic and he loves watching most of the comics OnDemand. I went to see what he was watching OnDemand, and I saw the description for Bill Santiago, it said; Proud Puerto Rican Bill Santiago list his top 10 list its great to be a latino and I thought I have to watch this guy and I did. After watching it by myself I told my kids and we watched it 2 times. I just want to say thank you, we had a great time. You are funny, smart and good looking.
I hope to see at the Chicago Improv.

Hi Bill,
Your name has come up in our event wrap meetings as "exactly what we were looking for.'"
Moya Walsh has the task of rewatching all of the performances and editing them into shows. She said your performance was "gold".
From my end, I put together the roster and then defend my choices. It is difficult to ascertain from a dvd, instead of seeing arists live. I spend months living on "hope" and trusting my instinct.
Your performance surpassed all of my expectations and CBC's.
These conversations have already gone up the chain of command. As CBC produces the Just for Laughs televised programming, it will be easy to recommend you.
Thank you for your professionalism and true artistic style. You appear "larger than life" on stage giving the audience a thrill and making great television.
Please stay in touch,
Kim

I was watching Comedy Central on Friday night and your special came on. I didn't realize it until I was spitting out my sprite that I hadn't seen a stand-up this good in a long time. That channel has had the dumbest, lamest stand-ups...but yours was by far the most entertaining. I think I will try to catch a show.
Bye and Keep it up.

Hola Bill,
Thank you for PERSONALLY replying to Marta's request. We saw you on Comedy Central and Marta fell in love with your honest appreciation for being Borinquen.
Comedy has been a big part of her healing, as has the pride que solamente los residentes de la Isla Encantada intienden. Me, I'm a gringo... pero aúnque mi cuerpo nació en Los Estados, mi corazón nacio en La Isla! While living there, I was told I was more Puertorrican than many natives because I defended the culture against the whiners who said, "It's better in the States." By the way... rum IS needed for a gringo to dance Salsa!
You've got a GREAT career ahead of you. You use the opportunity for cultural humility to point out the nuances of one of the rarest and most beutiful cultures on earth. Keep your pride. Puertorricans have a depth of character similar to Jews in that only half of the six or so million live on the island with the rest being scattered everywhere else. Like Jews, true Puertorricans consider the island their true home (although on my last visit there was a bit less applause on landing than there has been over the last 20 years).

Hola,
I am happy to provide a good reference for Bill. Not only was he an exemplary host at an 8-hour consumer event People en Español did in Central Park last year for 10,000 attendees, but he was actually funny! ;)
Bill managed to keep the crowd entertained, informed about all the music and cultural performances, and helped keep the various sponsors very happy with on stage giveaways, etc.
Bill also performed for the sponsors and Time Inc. executives the night before and literally had this 'elite, jaded' crowd tearing with laughter.
In short, Bill's performance throughout the event was professional, on time in all respects, and better than we had hoped for. The event was a huge success for the magazine, and Bill was a key reason for this.
If any further information is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Saludos,
Miguel Ferrer

I'll be seeing you Friday night in Hermosa Beach. You probably don't remember me, but I met you last fall in Hermosa Beach on that night with the crazy racist lady who said that white people are smarter than black people. (hopefully she won't be coming back). Anyway, I'm looking forward to tomorrow night and I'm bringing some people with me who haven't seen your act yet. I've talked you up so you have to do some of that Spanglish stuff for us...(please?) why? Porque because!

Hi Bill,
I randomly saw you perform in Tacoma, WA a few weekends ago. Enjoyed the show -- don't worry, I wasn't one of the few that were offended. I can't believe that lady fell asleep in the front row -- too much alcohol? Great show, it was a pleasure to watch you! Keep up the great work.
Best wishes,

Hola Bill,
I caught your show on Comedy Central. I held my breath as you began sharing about your family. Imagine my relief after I realized that you not one of my father's love child. Si, my Pop is un Rico Suave for sure. Thanks to my dual-cultured life after relocating from the NY projects to the deep South, I butcher the heck out of my Spanglish, verdad?
Oh well. I wouldn't expect that you would come to the Triangle in NC where I live. Though they contain the PR's in Fayetteville, but I'd love to catch your show with my family in Orlando sometime. Just check out the phonebook. The Santiagos are representin' in MCO.
I can't wait to turn my mom onto your act. It's fun. Yes, my mom flung a few changlas in her day. I am a darn good ducker.
Best,
Angie

And ofcourse its and added plus (to me) that you're a Rican by blood! WEEEEEEEEEPA COMPAI! =)

wow, was expecting more of a generic message, so i do appreciate the personalized response.. wasn't written by your personal assistant or something, was it?
(..and that's my attempt at being funny.)
how much are the dvd's? it'd have to have some of the spanglish stuff on there, that was definitely my favorite part. my specialty is pediatrics (all the people i was with, at one of the front row tables to your.. right, were peds residents) -- working in long island, and being thrown into situations where i'm speaking horrid spanish w/ a mother who can barely speak english.. well, it gets interesting. anyway, i've never seen a comic address it before. i didn't cry from laughing.. but i almost did.
i passed along the message to my friends, so you may acquire some new admirers.
take care,
laura

My friends and I were at the show on Saturday night - just wanted to tell you what a blast we had during your 'bit' (not sure what comedians call it..) Two of my friends laughed til they cried, literally. Should've told you outside afterwards, but was too shy. Just wanted you to know you acquired 6 new fans.
Looked at your schedule - do you plan on being in New York ever again??
Thanks for a great night,

Quotes inspire me, in my career and life.
The Warhol quote is one of my favorite. It motivated me to start up my production company with a friend of mine (bringing to life my dream to be a filmmaker) and actually do something and be someone, instead of being just a "figment" in people's imaginations.
I actually caught your Comedy Central Presents show last week (or so) and I loved it! Couldn't stop laughing. You are very funny and talented! Loved the Spanglish bit (because I, too, speak it).
I'll try and make a show whenever you're here.
Cheers for adding me.
Have a great day!
Adiós,
Tim

Hi bill !!!
That was a nice surprise; I didnt know you famous people had time to write to fans on myspace. I caught your show last Tuesday afternoon on CC. Wow! did I ever laugh... really loud. I was trying to remember if Id seen you before on TV but I dont think so; I wouldve remembered you. So, then te googlié, and I found your site, and then this space. So you were gonna be a journalist but ended up being a comic ah? Weird* I was gonna be a biologist and ended up a journo.
I finally made it to the hospital; it was for that visit... I went to see a teacher/mentor I had back when i was half my age, shes old now, had a stroke or something. Luckily for me, she was asleep at the time of the visit, so it wasnt as awkward as I had initially dreaded. I took over a figure of San Rafael, tho I had no idea who he was... I was told its the saint for sick people, so I figured it would make her family feel better. Then on Sunday I went to church because they had a mass for her. I hadnt been to church in years! And although it was nice, I realized all this time that passed didnt change me ... I still cant pay attention to the priest, or the people reading; I have major ADD.
Im sorry about your dad; I cant imagine what that must feel like. I mean, literally I cant imagine because I had the typical P.R. dad (o sea, no dad!) if you know what I mean ;)
I hope your grandma is better, I absolutely adore my grandma. Grandmas rock! Mine curses a lot, specially driving around... Maricón sin teta !!!!!!! thats what she calls anyone that cuts her off on the road.
It was pretty awesum to hear from you! I hope you make it down to PR sometime again, and I want to keep seeing you on TV too =)

Hi Bill, I first saw your stand up comedy in Comedy Central last month and loved it! Your latino / spanglish jokes are awesome...they had me laughing for hours.
When are you having CD's or downloads available? I would love to have your stuff availabe so I can listen to it on the road. Also...any acts in Florida soon? Orlando/Tampa/Miami would get a kick out of you with all the Latinos....or Hispanics :) in the area.
Because...porque! :)
Take care man!

BILL,
I saw you on comedy central and totally related!
My Family is from The Repulica de Panama. Somos sumamente tropicales y ... let call it eccentric.
Curly hair is sexy! Everyone want's it and all that teasing for all those years in school is just 'cause they are jealouse. Anyway, that's what I keep telling myself.
I have to tell you I am a super fan of yours. Thanks for adding me.

Hola!!
i am so thrilled to hear from you! I saw your special on comedy central and couldn't stop laughing!!!
I could relate to everything you were talking about, from the spanglish, to the glow in the dark rosary beads, and we even subscribe to People en Espanol and i always wondered why they didnt call it 'gente'!
very good point haha.
My mother Was born in Puerto Rico, and my father is the greek one. I've never been to Greece, but I have been to PR, only once and i cant wait to go back.
I grew up speaking Spanglish, and now i'm actually taking in it college, so i can really learn how to conjugate verbs and speak a little better.
Greek is very different! it a very hard language to learn
and you cant even sound it out when you are trying to read like in spanish because the alphabet has its own symbols like chinese!
Holidays and special occasions are very fun becuase both cultures enjoy dancing and eating!
This weekend I went to the Puerto Rican Day Festival and Parade, did you get a chance to see it?? That was a lot of fun!
Anyway, I would like to know the next time you will be in New York City or in the area because i would absolutely love to see you live, and bring the whole family so they can join in on the fun.
I live in Poughkeepsie, about an hour and a half upstate from the City. There is a comedy club here called Banana's Comedy Club on Rte 9, any chance you will ever do a show there? I have been checking your website but it doesn't have any upcoming dates.
Sorry i didnt mean for this to be so long! Thanks again for writing me, reply whenever you get the chance.
Have a good night, Nicole

Anyway, saw your show on Comedy Central like I promised I would-you are soooo talented. God Bless you and may you continue on a successful journey. Hello from the island of Puerto Rico, which is now in the middle of a possible general strike, where 95,000 public employees have been out of work for a week, where stress is mounting, and where sad to say our local TV has little to offer. This past week my family and I were delighted to have caught on HBO Comedy Central a new comedian, Bill Santiago and to my surprise puertorrican, that was what all of us on the island needed (pity it wasn’t available to the almost 4million living on the Island)
I am a regular viewer of Comedy Central, where I have enjoyed many shows, but very few where the sexual and adult language was not the main part of it. Mr. Santiago did a great job, not only with incredible material (does he write it?), but with little X rated material. So if you had anything to do with this show I would like to congratulate you in name of the thousands of cable viewers in Puerto Rico that view this great show!!!!!!
The only problems is we want more, will this show Spanglish 101 be on again soon,??
Muchas gracias,
M. Rodriguez

Hello Bill,
Gracias por lo add.
I've seen your act twice now, the first being at the Mother Jones Town Hall event (2004 perhaps?). Lizz Winstead, Janeane Garofolo were on the bill among others. Second time was somewhere on the UWS (I think).
Regardless ... you were hysterical both times, so of course I simply had to be MySpace friends with you ;)
I am on the mailing list, so unless you want to give me your phone number, there are no other ways I can stalk you.
Look forward to another performance soon.

Hola Bill,
I was bit looped by then, having fulfilled my two drink minimum in the second half of the first show.)
Felicitaciones en tu show con Comedy Central. Mandé la información a mi hermano y creo que va a ir con su esposa. Ella es brasileña (no sé si califica para la entrada gratis). No importa. Te quieren apoyar de todas maneras y los dos entienden mucho español. Lo siento pero ya no tengo más contactos en nyc. I’m sure my bro will try spread the word. Good luck. Wish I could be there.

Hi Bill,
Your performance on Thursday in Marin was amazing. You've got so much energy and your humor is so intelligent. It was a pleasure to watch you and talk to you after the show. I particularly liked the joke about the rat and cat -- "watch a self correcting universe." Enjoy your time in San Francisco and if you are as good at Salsa as you are at making people laugh, I would love to witness that performance as well.
All the best,

Mr Santiago:
I enjoyed the "intelligent design" essay in Mother Jones online. It's
fun to see "trompe l’oeil" used once in a while. It works better in
print than in conversation, even more so in Knoxville.
It's strange to me that people don't realize evolution IS "intelligent
design." I mean, sorta. I'm sorta stuck on "intelligent design" being
redundant, but that's the pedagogue in me.
I keep hoping that God will speak to me some day and he will sound
like Titus Moody. Or Jack Gifford, maybe.
The other person cc'd here is a local gadfly who tipped her friends off
to this beautiful essay.
Thanks,

Touché! I have not laughed so hard in a very long, long time. I really need a rise beyond the daily drivel of a species that didn't just invent the concept of the Peter Principle (as observed by Dr. L. J. Peter) but gave business a free hand in both the control and formation of our contemporary socio-cultural values. My favorite explication of of this principle can be found at

Thanks for the laugh

along came a BFO (Blinding Flash of the Obvious).
I would hope that at some point in your career
if you ever get to Chicago, get ahold of Luis

He's an amazing writer...as you seem to be. It's
a connection that popped up for me...

Bill!
Just wanted to say congratulations on your career…I met you briefly at the Victoria Theater a few years ago when you did a set for the Latin Kings of Comedy movie…I was the MC…That was my third time ever on stage as a “comic” and well, you witnessed it, so I won’t go into it…I will say that since I’ve gotten back into it (the Victoria was my third and last gig for a while—my wife and I just had a baby and it wasn’t possible for me to put the time into comedy during the pregnancy etc., etc.), I do the open mic. at Pepperbelly’s in Fairfield, CA (where I live) every Wenesday, and you’ll be glad to know that I have worked my way up to having a solid 4-minute routine…little by little, right?
Aaaaanyway, as a Latino I’m very proud of you, and as an aspiring comic I’m inspired by your accomplishments. Good job, Bill. Keep it up!

Bill Santiago - just more naturally funny - intellectual, witty - drew experience from real life and also had a sort of comic physical presence - shyness at first was pretty apparent but suited him - he got more comfortable and took cues from the audience. i thought it seemed pretty inherent to his performance - the best tonight by far.

Wassup Bill?
I first saw you on Premium Blend and I recently saw your special on Comedy Central which was great. I really like your work especially the Spanglish. When I was in High School I loved taking Spanish my first two years but when my senior year came around I had this crazy teacher and I sucked at the beginning of the year. But by the end of the year I averaged one point below an A and that crazy teacher couldn’t give me a point. But it helped with speaking Spanish and it seems like every time I turn to the Spanish channel I start speaking it like I’m a Latino or Hispanic. I kind of get that same vibe when I see you perform.

Dear Mr. Santiago,
I saw you when you opened up for Lewis Black a few years ago in Minneapolis and you were great. I am part of the University of Maryland's humor newspaper, the Maryland Cow Nipple, and one of our objectives next year is to bring a comedian to campus. We are located just outside of DC. I was wondering if you could send me some information about your schedule for the late summer and fall and about your pricing for shows. We are working on our budget and need an idea of how much we would need to save to bring a comedian to campus.
Thank you.

Hi Bill,
I saw you perform at Mother Jone's "State of the Union" in New York City last year at Town Hall. I've been dying to see another performance (I've never seen a comedian who could make me laugh so much!), but I'm having a difficult time finding a calendar of bookings.
Do you have one online anywhere? Is there a way I can access one? I really love your work and appreciate your humor!
Thanks!!

Dear Bill,
I hope the holiday season is treating you well! All of us at Mother Jones were thrilled you were able to participate in the State of the Union Comedy event in New York last September. It was a rousing success and you were, among the audience and the staff, one of the show highlights.
I'm writing today to see if you would be available to be our 'guest of honor' at an upcoming event for Mother Jones here in San Francisco. Each year, as a special thank you to our major supporters we throw a donor recognition party. It's an intimate affair-usually 40-60 people-that gives our donors an opportunity to mingle with staff, our board of directors, as well as each other.
When discussing the event this year your name came up immediately. With the often serious tone of our magazine and coming out of a disappointing election year we couldn't think of a better antidote than humor. We would be honored to have you join us for this special event if your schedule permits.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
Steve Katz

"My only ambivalence about Bush," Bill Santiago mused at the Herbst "Going Away Party," "is whether I should take him out myself." Pause, accompanied by cautious laughter. "To lunch, I mean," he clarified. "and talk some damn sense into the boy." The place erupted. By both airing and deflating his own hostility, Santiago had momentarily opened and cleansed the audience's dark spirit.”

Hola Bill,
I wanted to let you know that I am the newly elected president of the Bill Santiago Fan Club - San Francisco Chapter. The three of us in the club watched your performance on Comedy Central this past Friday night and decided we needed to unite ourselves in order to promote you and enlighten our gente with you as our leader!!
Then, last Saturday night, I went to see my friend Jacqueline Rago perform at La Peña in Berkeley, and walking out I picked-up a calendar of events for Jan/Feb 2004. Noting that you will be there on 2/6, I immediately informed the other club members and we will be bringing in many more future fan club members in February. We're even talking about making buttons.
On behalf of myself and the club, te deseamos unas fiestas felices y muchas
bendiciones en 2004.

Bill came to us as part of a program curated by and featuring Culture Clash. He absolutely won over our audience in a very tough "house" and had them right where any politically oriented comedic performer would want an audience - right in the center of his hand. (He worked on a stage that is separated from the audience by 40 feet of water and he still communicated with the crowd as if he were in an intimate coffee house. We were amazed.) His material was timely, topical and intelligent. The audience was very responsive and we are seriously interested in bringing him back - quite possibly next year as a lead in to the fall elections. That night our audience was a mix of folks of different generations and different ethnic backgrounds. In spite of the edgy quality of his work, we did not get any negative reactions and heard only positive reactions during his routine and from people afterward.

Dear Bill,
I saw you perform last night at the Punchline, and you gave me your card so I could be put on your mailing list. I thought you were absolutely hilarious and the best comic out of all the ones I saw. Good luck with your career. Please put me on your list. Thank you!

Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for performing. You were brilliant, politically astute, funny
as all hell... I don't know how much political comedy you generally do, but
I'd say it's your calling.

I rarely rave about anyone, but Bill has got a big fan! He’s a thinking comic. I’m looking for his list of gigs.

Bill is charismatic, has a huge stage presence and to top that off he is a wonderful man...
Watch out for this one...

Bill Santiago is a great writer and a wonderfully physical comic, with facial expressions that are as changeable and funny as what we saw in Lucy. I love this guy.
I want to have his children; but, I alas am too old!

Just saw Bill Santiago at California Plaza in L.A. Almost injured myself laughing. Particularly appreciated his political humor, there’s so little of it out there. When’s the CD coming out?

It’s the morning after seeing Bill at Marsh’s Mock Cafe and my face still hurts. Hysterical and intelligent, Bill is clearly a rising star.
